As scientific research time and again proved that herbal and nutritional supplements can have positive impact on health and well being, many companies started to sprout manufacturing poor quality products, with fraudulent claims. While we do not want to name the leading companies, we would cite several examples on what motivated us to start this company. A leading manufacturer's product (Red Yeast Rice) was found to be contaminated with significant amounts of lovstatin, a cholesterol lowering. FDA issued a serious warning letter to them. Recently, USFDA cracked down a Vitamin B supplement manufactured by another reputed company, as their analysis revealed it to contain potentially harmful anabolic steroids (Methasterole and Dimethazine). Another FDA crackdown on a leading health supplement product intended for "arthritis, muscle pain, osteoporosis, bone cancer, and other conditions" revealed that the product actually had several dangerous drugs with serious side effects. Even worse, the manufacturer did not list them on the label causing serious harm to the people taking them. In another instance, a highly reputed herbal supplement manufacturer products were found to cause severe liver injury to people taking them. These findings on liver toxicity were published in a reputed scientific journal called, "World Journal of Heapatology", with the research article titled, "Acute liver injury induced by weight-loss herbal supplements". A detailed information on above references can be found with a simple google search. Beware, some of these manufacturers are still selling products in the market exploiting the innocent consumers and potentially harming them.
As consumers, we need to educate ourselves and enrich ourselves with the knowledge of the products that we are taking, who makes them?, Where they are made? and are the manufacturing facilities FDA inspected and Approved? The current dietary and nutritional supplement manufacturing is many times performed in unhygienic conditions and many a time out of the United States, making quality control and inspection a tough process. Further, these products are made with cheap, poor quality raw materials, with fraudulent practices which may pose the consumers significant health risks. The consumers need to be very wary of the products that do not specifically mention where they are manufactured and bear a misleading quality control seal from the manufacturer themselves.
